Enneapogon cenchroides is an tufted annual or short-lived perennial grass that is hairy at its base and often has branched culms. Height is variable, ranging from 15 cm to 100 cm.  Inflorescence is a grayish, dense panicle that looks like a spike; florets have lemmas with 9 awns.
